Accents of the UK

Accents of the UK was an Electronic Publication, part of an online service 2006-2010. It was a member of the Streaming Speech family. It featured nine accents from mainland UK and one from Ireland. It was for intermediate learners. The purpose was to familiarise users with a variety of accents, and to compare them to the standard British accents of English language textbooks. This image shows the first page of the introduction, and the faces of the speakers, and the locations that they came from.

After a listening comprehension exercise, and with screens of follow up, where students could interact with that part of the recording that contained the information required to answer correctly. There were then screens such as the one below where the differently-accented versions of  particular words and phrases were compared. Students could also record themselves imitating either or both accents. There’s much more to Accents of the UK, if you’d like a demonstration, email me richardcauldwell@me.com
